Whether on our fingers or our toes, our nails take quite a lot of abuse without our knowing it. They silently and diligently protect our delicate digits from damage and harm. Here are a few tips on how to take good care of them. Keep Them Clean – Seems obvious, but it’s very easy for bacteria and fungi to grow in the small space under the nail. Try wearing gloves if you know you will be exposed to chemicals and avoid soaking your hands in water for too long. Trim Regularly – Keeping your nails at the right length prevents them from getting caught, chipped or broken. If you find it hard to trim, try soaking them in warm water or take a bath beforehand, this helps soften them up a little. Use A Moisturiser – Your nails can also benefit from the restorative properties of moisturising lotion. Just massage some into the cuticles and along the nails when you next reach for your hand lotion. Eat Iron – If your nails are fragile or chip easily, you might be a little short of iron. Top up with foods rich in iron. Lentils, spinach, soy products, sunflower seeds, salmon, chicken liver are all examples of food with good concentrations of iron. Curiously, nails are also one of the factors we take into account when gathering a “first impression” of someone. So it’s probably best to present our best when presenting our nails!
